Is protein powder safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

In a previous post, we detailed how protein is an important nutritional component for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and women recovering from delivery.

Pregnant women require about 70 grams of protein per day. Because the fetus grows faster during the second and third trimesters, protein levels during these periods are more important than during the beginning of the pregnancy. This additional protein can be acquired by eating protein-rich foods as part of a balanced diet. But for some mothers, a “normal” diet may not be enough to reach healthy protein levels.

Powders and Protein Bars

Nutritional supplements like protein powder and protein bars are a popular way to boost the body’s protein levels, and are commonly used by athletes trying to gain muscle or dieters trying to lose weight (by replacing carbs and boosting metabolism). But are these products right for mothers?

Protein powders generally use whey, soy, and casein protein. These proteins all come from milk and are normally safe to consume—although there is limited evidence about their effects on a pregnant body. Most sources recommend consulting your doctor before using while pregnant. Some protein shakes contain artificial sweeteners like saccharin, which can be harmful to your fetus. And a 2010 Consumer Reports study on protein shakes aimed at athletes found significant levels of arsenic, cadmium, and lead.

Protein bars may also include ingredients pregnant women should avoid, namely artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame, which haven’t been proven safe for pregnant women. Some bars also have herbal supplements which you should talk to your obstetrician about before consuming.

Protiva provides a safe alternative to these products if you’re trying to increase your protein intake.

How is Protiva different?

Protiva is all natural and does not contain any artificial flavors, sweeteners, or colors.

Protiva is also:
●   lactose free

Protiva uses collagen protein, a naturally occurring fibrous protein that supports connective tissue growth. Collagen’s regenerative properties make it an ideal post-delivery choice for anyone who delivered via Caesarean section or had an episiotomy.

Most importantly, Protiva is safe and effective.

Protiva is the first and only pregnancy protein drink to have completed a clinical study approved by an institutional review board and has demonstrated effectiveness in improving protein levels during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
